Review – Wreck It Ralph
Wreck It Ralph (PG)
Written By Kate Maitland-Gleed
Rated: 4 out of 5
I went to watch his film with very low expectations. By watching the trailers, to me, it looked try hard and too childish for my liking. So I sat there, popcorn in hand, surrounded by a full cinema screen, waiting for ‘Wreck It Ralph’ to start. And my, how wrong I was! Within the first 5 minutes I was laughing. With the amazing John C. Reilly voicing the character ‘Ralph’, along side Jack McBrayer (Fix’it Felix Jr.), Jane Lynch (Calhoun) and Sarah Silverman (Vanellope), what is there not to like. Plus, on top of that, there is a whole game based on sweets!! Wow!
Mario, Sonic, PacMan. Just some of the names we remember from childhood games that we played for hours on end. But what about Browser, Dr. Eggman and the PacMan Ghosts; the ‘bad guys’ as we called them. We forget about them. They have feelings too. What do they do when the games aren’t being played. What if they wanted to be the hero of the game for once? Like Ralph does. Wreck It Ralph ruins buildings, breaks spirits and is feared by all. But he wants to be happy and loved like Felix – the hero of the game. But the only way Ralph can prove himself is by winning a gold medal… Not from his own game, but from another. Hero Duty! A perilous game that unleashes a mass of giant flying bugs that you must shoot. I know, it’s gripping stuff! But his plan goes wrong, Ralph ends up in a land made of chocolate, marshmallows, candy canes and any sweet treat you can think of. (I wish I could go there!!) But then what happens? Pause for effect… You will have to watch the film to find out!!
Wreck It Ralph gives us a perspective into the lives of games characters after the arcade is closed. They have a whole world or their own. And although I’m not a child anymore, I still in actual fact enjoyed this film far more than I thought I would. And speaking to my friends who have also watched it, they seemed to as well. So… Enjoy!

When a film leaves you wanting to watch it again immediatley afterwards, you know it was good. Wreck-It Ralph is the tale of a bad guy, who doesn’t want to be bad any more, who leaves his game to prove himself a hero in another game, by ‘game jumping’. I can’t say too much about the story, but what I will say is expect a very strong storyline with lots of clever twists along the way. This film is perfect for both kids and adults alike, especially anyone who’s ever played a video game, and will remind some of classic arcade games.
With its mix of heart-pounding action sequences, stunning animation, and clever gags, this film is an instant hit and a must-see over the upcoming half-term holiday. Adults will appreciate some of the comedy on a different level to the kids, but there’s something funny for everyone. The entire film is a feast for the eyes – I did find myself wanting to actually eat parts of the film, in the game ‘Sugar Rush’.. which brings me onto the 3D. I saw the 3D version and I have to say I was very impressed – the 3D was used to full effect and really added depth and atmosphere of the film. It lets you feel more involved in the film itself, something which not a great deal of 3D movies have so far been able to achieve. Saying that, it is more than likely just as good in 2D.
The talented voice cast includes, John C. Reilly (Step Brothers), Sarah Silverman (The Simpsons, School of Rock), Jack McBrayer (Despicable Me), and Jane Lynch (Glee, Role Models).
The film boasts an awesome soundtrack, featuring the likes of Owl City, Rihanna and even Skrillex, which i’ve already downloaded! From start to finish, the film had my eyes locked on the screen with my full attention.

Review – LES MISERABLES
Reviewed by Dan Spracklen
Rating: 5 out of 5
In short, a beautiful film which tells the story of a man who tries to better the world around him. Les Miserables has been playing to sellout audiences for the past 4 weeks here at the Plaza, with many returning to see it a second time – which, if you’ve seen it you’ll know is unsurprising. The stunning cast includes Hugh Jackman (The X-Men movies), Russell Crowe (Robin Hood), Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia!), Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada, The Dark Knight Rises), Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat), and Helena Bonham Carter (Alice in Wonderland). Introducing Daniel Huttlestone, who plays young boy Gavroche – this is his first film acting role and I must say i’m very impressed – one to watch in the future! He started his acting career aged 9 landing the part of “Nipper” in Oliver! at Theatre Royal Drury Lane, from 2009 until 2011.
I cannot fault this film in the slightest, and though the length may put people off, the music and the way the story is told is likely to suck you into the world on screen and it doesn’t feel like 3 hours at all… though you may want to make sure you’re stocked up on a drink and a snack! The way some parts of the story, which is set in 19th-century France, are told is so beautiful and moving, needless to say it has had many in tears. We see each of our main characters in turn towards the beginning of the movie, and as it develops, we see how they are all linked and the stories begind them and their actions. I liked the way that some parts of the story were told fairly subtly, and yet they are so powerful, a reminder that sometimes actions speak louder than words.
The soundtrack is absolutley brilliant, and I believe the album has been number 1 in UK charts for the past couple of weeks. I’m thinking of getting it myself! The songs really do help along the story, and match what’s happening at the time. The light relief in the film from all the sadness comes from comedic pair Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter – who play clueless foster parents. This works very well and their lines are a welcome pause from the more tender storylines that are also happening.
All in all, a very very good film. If you’ve not yet experienced it, there’s still time! Head over to www.plazadorchester.com/film/les-miserables to book your tickets now! PS – Remember to take some tissues!
