Twilight : Breaking Dawn Part 1–Preview

imageThe Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 Preview

By Rachel Geeson

The Twilight Saga is a series of supernatural romance fantasy films based on the four Twilight series novels by the American author Stephanie Meyer. The main characters are; Kristen Stewart who plays teenager, Isabella “Bella” Swan, Robert Pattinson who plays vampire Edward Cullen and Taylor Lautner who plays werewolf Jacob Black.

Twilight was the start of a phenomenon across the globe. It started the crazy obsession of fans deciding what team was better; Team Jacob or Team Edward.

I remember the first time I saw “Twilight” in the cinema, as it was a school day out at Tower Park. The screen was packed and we were all excited to see the film and it definitely lived up to our expectations.

imageIn the first film, released in 2008, there are a few parts that stick out and make the film as big as it is now. One of my favourite moments was the scenes between Edward and Bella in their Biology class. The facial expressions and body language that Edward made when the fan blew Bella’s scent over to him was a laugh out loud moment as he struggled to control himself. Another scene is between Jacob and Bella towards the end telling her about his dad’s warning. Jacob and Bella’s friendship begins in this film and soon develops and changes in the next films. A threatening and quite uncomfortable scene is between James (The Tracker) and Bella. They are in the ballet studio in Phoenix, James begins to taunt her and make a video of her death. However Edward and other members of the Cullen family arrive and kill James and save Bella. Although James is dead, another vampire is after Bella. Victoria wants Edward to suffer like she has so in the final moments of the film she is shown, a menacing look on her face. The face of someone who wants revenge.

imageIn 2009, the sequel “New Moon” hit the big screens. After a few scenes, one accident called devastation for Bella, as on her birthday whilst opening presents at the Cullen house, she cut her finger on the wrapping paper causing Jasper to launch at Bella because of the scent of her blood. The family restrained Jasper just in time, however due to the incident the Cullen’s decided to leave the town of Forks. This meant that Edward would be leaving Bella. The goodbye scene between the pair was heart-breaking, with much sympathy for Bella. If you have read the book you would realise how emotionally broken Bella was, and would know more about what through her mind as she struggled to get through losing a massive part of her heart. Gradually with Charlie’s encouragement she began to hang around with her friends, which led to her friendship with Jacob Black. He is a cheerful companion to her and eases her pain over losing Edward, until he begins to avoid her all of a sudden. Bella later discovers that Jacob along with other locals from his part of town have become werewolves, an age-old enemy of vampires. This comes in handy to Bella as she needs protection from Victoria. Towards the end of the film we watched one of the most gripping parts as Alice and Bella raced against time to save Edward. He had believed that Bella committed suicide due to miscommunications involving Alice’s visions becoming unclear and Jacob telling Edward about a funeral. However they reached him in the nick of time just before he is about to expose himself as a vampire in a busy crowd, to provoke a powerful vampire coven known as the Volturi. Although Edward is safe, Bella is told by the Volturi that she must be transformed into a vampire due to the knowledge of their existence. Later on in the film Jacob reminds Edward of the treaty to the Cullens made with the Quileute tribe; that they will not attack each other, as long as the Cullens do not bite any humans, which is a necessary action required in transforming Bella. The film ends with Edward telling Bella that he will change her into a vampire, but only if she marries him first.

imageThe most recent Twilight Saga film to be in the cinema in 2010 was “Eclipse”, where we watched a wild group of new born vampires fight against both the Cullen family and the werewolves resulting in a few casualties. Throughout the film the love between Bella and Edward grew even stronger by the end as they went to the next level in their relationship when she agreed to marry Edward. With their relationship getting more intense, Bella and Jacob‘s friendship also gets closer as he admits that he is in love with and kisses her, however she is less than thrilled and she punches him in the face which resorts in causing herself to break her hand against his werewolf strength. Later on Victoria is building a newborn army of vampires and when they decide to come to Forks to get revenge, the Cullens and werewolves have to put aside their differences and are standing together in this fight. The evening before the fight; Jacob, Bella and Edward hide up the mountain and set up camp. During the night whilst pretending to be asleep Bella overhears a conversation between Edward and Jacob, where they decided to put aside their differences and hatred for each other on a temporary basis. In the morning things take a turn for the worse when Jacob overhears Edward and Bella discussing their engagement and becomes very upset. Before he can run off to get himself killed in the fight with the newborns, Bella desperately asks him to kiss her, and she realizes that she has fallen in love with him. Edward finds out about the kiss but is not angry, as Bella says she loves him more than Jacob. Victoria eventually manages to track down Bella’s hiding spot and after Bella cuts herself in order to cause a distraction, Edward and a young werewolf named Seth kill both Victoria and her partner Riley. After the fight has ended, the Volturi then decide to turn up and notice that Bella is still a human; however she tells them that the date is set. After that Bella visits an injured Jacob and lets him know that although she is in love with him, she has chosen to be with Edward. Saddened by her choice, Jacob reluctantly agrees to stop trying to come between her and Edward. In the last scenes of the film Bella and Edward go to their meadow, where she tells him she has decided to do things his way: get married, make love on their honeymoon, and then be transformed into a vampire. Then they decide they need to tell Charlie about their engagement, which must have gone well as Bella and Edward have their beautiful white wedding in the next film.

In “Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1”, the moments that I would look out for would be the wedding, the honeymoon and the decision that Edward has to make when he decides when to transform Bella.

This movie is set to be in the same league as the previous films and I cannot wait to see it.
