Mission: Impossible- Ghost Protocol

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (12a)

Reviewed by Rachel Geeson

Score:

After 5 years, Ethan Hunt is back on the big screens in the fourth installment in the action-adventure spy film.  Tom Cruise reprises his role as Ethan Hunt, IMF agent and works alongside previous Mission Impossible actor Simon Pegg (Paul, 2011) who plays Benji Dunn an IMF technical field agent. Also joining his team is Jane Carter played by Paula Patton (Déjà Vu, 2006) and Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker, 2008).

Blamed for the terrorist bombing of the Kremlin, Ethan Hunt is disowned along with the rest of the agency when the President initiates “Ghost Protocol”. Left without any resources or backup, Ethan must find a way to clear his agency’s name and prevent another attack. To complicate matter further, Ethan is forced to embark on this mission with a team that he does not fully know.

One of the best scenes is when Tom Cruise is hanging more than 100 floors up on the glass windows of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the world’s tallest building. The stunts for Ethan Hunt were all done by the actor himself, and in this scene in particular he manages to grip the audience’s attention in the breath-taking movements that he makes.

Another scene in the film that stands out is when Ethan and Benji are in the vaults of the Kremlin Archive and create a virtual reality illusion which is used to fool a guard. The director is an academy award winning American director. He is best known for directing and writing Disney/Pixar’s The Incredibles (2004) and Ratatouille (2007). Bird puts his animator’s sense of timing to good use with the opening scene involving fast pace fighting, where Ethan breaks out of a Russian prison with the help of some of his team.

I definitely recommend this film as there are moments of adrenaline, laughter and suspense throughout the film. Mission: Impossible 4 stands as one of the big-studio highlights of the year.

New Year’s Eve – Review

New Year’s Eve

Reviewed by Rachel Geeson

Score: 4/5

If you liked Valentine’s Day and Love Actually, then you will love New Year’s Eve.

New Year’s Eve celebrates love, hope, forgiveness, second chances and fresh starts, in the stories told amongst the pulse and promise of New York City on the most dazzling night of the year.

The film is directed by Garry Marshall and stars Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jon Bon Jovi, Zac Efron, Ashton Kutcher, Hilary Swank, Abigail Breslin, Halle Berry, Katherine Heigl, Jessica Biel, Sarah Jessica Parker, Lea Michele, Josh Duhamel and Sofía Vergara

The movie tells intertwining stories of a group of New Yorkers as they navigate their way through romance over the course of New Year’s Eve. Robert De Niro will play a bitter dying man in a hospital, while Michelle Pfeiffer will be a frustrated executive secretary who decides to tackle her unfulfilled resolutions. Hilary Swank will play a producer of the famed Times Square New Year’s Eve show. Ashton Kutcher will play a guy who hates New Year’s Eve.

The film made the audience go through a number of emotions when watching this film; mainly during the hospital scenes and the scenes in Times Square.

I’m sure that whilst watching this film, you will see yourself in one or more of the characters and in doing so feel part of their journey.

Sherlock Holmes 2 – Review

Sherlock Holmes 2 – Review

Review by – Kate Maitland-Gleed

Score 5/5

In my opinion, earning the title; ‘Best Sequel I Have Seen’ I believe this film will go down a hit with everybody. If you like adventure, war-fare, ‘bromance’, comedy and romance then this film is not for you! Yeah right… Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows, has the whole lot. There’s something for everybody. After a dramatic start – very much the same way film 1 began, I knew this film was going to be a hit!

After excepting the fact that his ‘brother from another mother’, Watson (played by Jude Law), is getting married to the beautiful Mary (played by Kelly Reilly), the same old Sherlock Holmes (once again played by Robert Downey Jr.), takes on the role of best man. But the luxurious honeymoon Mr. and Mrs. Watson had arranged, has a complementary platter of guns, explosions, plots and a lot of shouting… Not the best wedding gift! On the plus side Sherlock’s brother – Mycroft Holmes (played by Stephen Fry), is there to help, bringing even more comedic acting to the film. With a larger part played by Mary, it shows that women are equally intellectual as the men! Funny, shocking, gripping and emotional scenes really brings the audience together.

These Guy Ritchie interpretations of the ‘Sherlock Holmes’ character is the thinking man’s ‘James Bond’ with more humour and action. The cinema wasn’t too far from being packed out! With a mixture of ages from about 11 to 50, it interests a wide variety! I’m sure it will interest you as well! And… It’s worth the ticket price just to see Robert Downey Jr. in a dress!!!!!!

I give this film:

Puss in Boots – Review

Puss in Boots

Reviewed by Rachel Geeson

Score: 4/5

The feisty feline is back on our screens with this funny and adventurous film. The film is a spinoff prequel to the Shrek franchise, as it follow’s the journey of Puss in Boots before he made his first appearances in Shrek 2 (2004).

Antonio Banderas’s voice returns in the character of Puss. The film makes good use of the fact that Puss is a charming rebel, as he is involved in a fast paced dance and sword fight sequence towards the beginning.  Puss also shows the audience his adorable cat side when he chases a light reflection from a mirror and slurping up milk.

Before he even met Shrek and Donkey, Puss in Boots grew up an orphan in the village of San Richardo. Known as the Diablo Gato, he would steal from the rich to survive and stop anyone with his sword who got in his way. During the Festival of Fire and the Chicken, he is told by bar patrons that Jack and Jill are in town and they have in their possession the mythical magic beans. Puss decides he will steal them in order to grow a beanstalk to the giant’s castle and steal the golden goose.

At Jack and Jill’s hotel room, Puss sneaks in, but so does another cat burglar. The two begin to argue and end up alerting Jack and Jill. Puss and the mysterious figure flee, but not without Puss chasing him down for answers. The chase ends up at an underground feline milk bar. To his amazement, he discovers that the he is actually a beautiful she, named Kitty Softpaws. She too is also after the magic beans because she is partners with Humpty Dumpty. Puss is angered that she would work with Humpty because he was betrayed by him many years ago which is why Puss has a bounty on his head to this day. Humpty, trying to make up for past mistakes, convinces Puss to help out so they can use the gold eggs to correct past wrongs. Puss reluctantly agrees but still doesn’t trust Humpty. Together all three embark on an adventure to go after Jack and Jill, steal the magic beans, and get the golden goose.

I would have to say I enjoy Puss in the Shrek films, I still would recommend this film to all ages as it will keep you laughing throughout.

Hugo 3D -Review

HUGO 3D – REVIEW

BY Katie Maitland-Gleed

Score 4/5

After watching the trailer for Hugo, I wasn’t particularly looking forward to seeing it. But with opening scenes of the beautiful Paris in winter, also reminding me of the famous book ‘Clockwork’, I thought this film would be right up my street. Including appearances from Jude Law, Richard Griffiths, Frances de la Tour, Christopher Lee, Ray Winston and the amazing Sacha Baron Cohen – who brought an awesome flash of comedy, this film was like going to Johnny Depp’s birthday party. Asa Butterfield, who played Hugo, was a very good actor to play the part. ‘Hugo’s’ personality was strong, courageous and witty, and after playing ‘Bruno’ in 2008’s ‘The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas’, this wasn’t a to harder part to play.

Trying to carry on his deceased father’s project and only memory – a broken-down automaton, Hugo, an orphaned 13 year-old who now lives in the walls of Paris’ biggest train station, he has to resort to stealing to enable himself to finish the piece of fine art. After finally being caught by the Station’s Toy Store owner, Georges Méliès, a broken man anguished by the shadows of the past – played by Ben Kingsley, things take a turn for the worse… Will they straighten out? Don’t answer just go see the film!!! Trying to make things right, Hugo meets Méliès’ Goddaughter, Isabelle – played by the gorgeous Chloe Grace Moretz. Together they begin to unravel the mystery behind the old automaton. With a second character hot on his heels – bumbling Station Inspector (Baron-Cohen), Hugo must work as hard as possible to conquer his adventure.

Now, I wouldn’t say I was wrong but it didn’t live up to my expectations. On the other hand, the screening was quite full. Mainly parents and their children but a few older members of Dorchester’s youth! I would say that is is quite a hard film to understand as it jumps about a bit. Mind you… It was the best 3D film I have watched in a long time. With snow, explosions and spit it was a really good experience!
