REVIEW – IRON MAN 3

105271h1IRON MAN 3 (12A)200px-5_stars.svg[1]

reviewed by Dan Spracklen

Amazing! The third in the Iron Man franchise is bigger and better than the first, and far better than the second! Its combination of stunning action sequences, top notch acting, and a surprising amount of laugh-out-loud comedy makes it the perfect film for all to see. I think this is easily my favourite film of the year so far. The 2hours 20 mins running time (or thereabouts) is about the length you’d expect for a Marvel film, however for those wondering if it’s too long – it’s not. It really keeps you going right up until the end, and certainly doesn’t feel dragged out. One thing is for sure, you can’t tell Disney own Marvel now!

The story follows Tony Stark as he threatens a terrorist, giving him his home address in the process… All hell (unsurprisingly) breaks loose and all is not quite what it seems with regards to what is actually going on… I can’t give too much away about the story for I don’t wish to ruin it, but I will say it’s a good one that is sure to keep you hooked. The acting is very good, something that sometimes gets missed in action films – but not Iron Man 3…. With a few new characters, including bad guy Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce – Prometheus) and young boy Harley (Ty Simpkins – Insidious) who Iron Man forms an interesting kind of bond with, a source of a fair amount of comedy (you’ll have to watch it to see what I mean).

I saw the 3D version, and it has to be said that it does look stunning in 3D, however as always if you’re not a fan of 3D it won’t detract from the film itself if you see it in 2D. I just feel it adds a bit more immersion to the experience. If you like 3D, you’re in for a treat.

An instant cinematic classic! Go and see it NOW, take your friends, your family, take everyone!! Essential viewing for any action or comedy fan for sure!105271h3

REVIEW – Small Apartments

220px-Small_Apartments_FilmPoster200px-4_stars.svg[1]SMALL APARTMENTS (15)

Reviewed by Dan Spracklen

Starring Matt Lucas, this drama-comedy, and adaptation of Chris Millis’ novel, is a quirky tale of a group of people living in a building of, you guessed it, small apartments. Not quite the light-hearted comedy you might expect from Matt Lucas though, and certainly nothing like Little Britain (though there is a similarity with the various wigs his character likes to wear…). It all starts with Franklin Franklin, a clumsy deadbeat who is surrounded by odd neighbours. He has accidentally killed his landlord and is trying to work out what to do with the body… He’s got a dog called Nugget who is his only company, and is often seen leaving his apartment wearing only his tighty-whities.

This i’d say is very much an arthouse-y film, not for the faint hearted and surprisingly contains some gore. Having said that, i’d also describe it as a cinematic gem and would not hesistate seeing it again! Acting from Matt Lucas is very strong, as with the rest of the cast, which includes James Caan (Elf), and Juno Temple (The Dark Knight Rises).

A top-notch film from director Jonas Åkerlundsmall-apartments
