Let me start by saying that this film is not for the faint hearted. Paranormal Activity 3 is the third film in the Paranormal Activity series and is the prequel, which is set 18 years prior to the events of the first two films.

The film begins in 2005, when Katie delivers a box of old videotapes to her pregnant sister, Kristi, and Kristi’s husband, Daniel. A year later, Kristi and Daniel’s house is seemingly burgled and the tapes are missing. Amongst some of the video tapes were videos of Katie and Kristi when they were younger.

clip_image004In 1988, Katie and Kristi live with their mother, Julie, and her boyfriend Dennis. The youngest daughter Kristi has recently been interacting with her invisible friend who she describes as “tall” and “old”. Since Kristi has started talking to Toby strange things have been happening around the house. When Dennis and Julie try to make a sex tape, they are shaken up when an earthquake hits. When looking back at the tape Dennis and his friend Randy notice that when dust falls from the ceiling it falls on an invisible figure in the room, and when it moves the dust drops to the floor. Randy then suggests that Dennis places a number of cameras around the house. He places one in his and Julie’s room, one in the girls’ room and one downstairs that rotates and shows the kitchen and the living room.

The audience are in the position of the camera’s perspective during the night and sometimes during the day which makes what we witness in the film seem surreal. There are many scenes in the film that are terrifying and keep the audience on edge of their seats. One jumpy moment occurred when the wife hid in the cupboard with a mask on and suddenly she jumped out at her husband and his friend when they were checking around the house for mysterious sounds.

clip_image006Another scene involved the babysitter sitting in the kitchen; this was an extremely tense moment as you try to prepare yourselves, waiting for the strange incident to happen. However one of the scariest and nail-biting scene’s makes the audience feel extremely agitated when they witness Katie and Randy playing “Bloody Mary” in the bathroom. The game soon turns violent when they begin to get terrorised and trapped by an unknown force on the other side of the door.

The sudden ending was strange as even when the film had ended everyone’s heart was racing. The shocks and twists of the film had a big impact on the audience with nervous laughter from some people and small screams from others. When watching the film it becomes slightly haunting as the audience keep expecting disturbing and frightening scenes to happen, and even when it does, everyone still jumps. It was definitely a good film to watch on Halloween night. I highly recommend watching this film. But in case you’re easily spooked and are a jumpy person, make sure you have a jacket to hide behind or a friends hand to grip during the scary parts.
